A newly reborn Monarch grabs hold of our vine just before it finally leaves its birth place. Lori has been acting as a surrogate mother for these little guys shortly after they were discovered on our milkweed plant.
I first became familiar with the special beauty of Monarchs while visiting the Goleta Butterfly Grove many years ago. After our move south, Lori discovered that Encinitas has a special relationship with Monarchs as well — thanks to the local vivarium at Butterfly Farms. Butterfly Farms focuses on bringing education about this wonderful species that has experienced an astonishing 80% decline in the last two decades. In 2019 the the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will be required by law to make a judgement one way or the other. Hopefully they will see fit to rule in favor of granting these special creatures endangered species protection.
